Cambridge, southwestern Nebraska
It really depends on your soil type and expected rainfall.
Out here we can get yields of 10 bu./1,000 plants so 25,000 final population can yield 250bu./a. We saw a lot of our dryland corn have favorable moisture this year and yield 130 to over 200 with a plant population of 16,000 to 19,000. I think our limitation this year was we fertilized for an expected yield of 90 to 100 bu./a. and rainfall gave us a lot more potential and we just limited the yield due to lack of N.
If your soil is sandy I would cut the population some to get through drier periods between rains. Or if you go through prolonged strteches of dry weather a lower pouplation will allow the plant to have a little reserve moisture to wait for the next rain.
Best bet would be to ask locally what others are doing or your seed salesman. I think your a little high but if you are expecting to achieve 200 bu. corn your probably right on.
