You do not have to remove the wheels. Deere spec is .010 measured where the axle extends out from the axle housing. You are measuring radial play, not end play. Set the dial indicator magnetic base on the axle housing and measure off of the axle surface. I for one do not think that .010 is much and usually do not replace axle bearings at that point unless there is a noise complaint associated with axle bearings. After years of experience, I go by "feel" and listen for a subtle "clunk". Unless you are putting a lot of load on the rear axles such as heavy mounted equipment, I would'nt be too concerned about .010 radial play on the axle. Just make it a part of your annual check list when you go over your equipment. Good luck.
