According to my local sheriff, marking with a unique number that he can issue is the only chance tools will ever come back. Nobody looks at serial numbers, just for these special number that the thief can't explain when selling. Your identification of the evidence without that special number marking won't fly in the sheriff's office either.

I've also found its important to not put handles on overhead doors to let them open from the outside. And to brace the walk door frames so they can't be sprung off the lock plungers. Breakins trys will tear up the edge of the door but not get it open and "casual" visitors will twist off the locked overhead door handles. A couple lynch pins in the extended locking bars on the inside of an overhead door won't jimmy out.
