If he does not keep it tight to the ground he'll probably be in trouble, especially if he does not have a lot of lift on the V plow.
I do not think I would want to get it very far away from a big horse to tug it back out of a drift. A V plow will move a lot of snow when it is moving, but when it stops it is very good anchor.
