Twin I-beam suspensions are independent suspensions but they haven't made them since the late 70's. They had king pins, not ball joints. Not sure but I think all 96 F-250's are independent. Each axle hinges like the twin I-beams. You don't have to pull them out but you can, grease may run out the left side if you do. Some models had clips holding the axles in and you had to remove the cover off of the differential and remove the spider pin to get the clips out. On those type I never took the axles out.
