We have an '81 1086 we bought new and two years ago I overhauled the engine and put a new TA/clutch in it, it was the first time the valve cover had ever been off the engine and I was replacing the original TA at 12,000 hours. Our's shifts pretty good and it rides decent now after putting an air seat in it.
