That was the same case here until 1999 when they came out with CRC in our county. I signed up for the first time in our family's history. Collected anough that fall to pay the next three years' premiums.
I asked Dad about it, and he said even in their worst years of '34 and '36, they always had at least half a crop. We never signed up for the old multi-peril crop insurance because we never could have collected, like Pa Kettle said. But if you can say that you never would have had an occasion to collect on 75% or 80% CRC coverage, I'd like to know where and how you farm to get such consistent yields.
CRC and RA changed that. With the cost subsidy, decent coverage is now available, and for anyone with very much debt, I consider it a must. If you don't have much debt, I probably wouldn't recommend it.
