Brian, that’s a good question.
I planted Oats for a variety of reasons: 1) I'm a tightwad, meaning that I had some leftover Oats (nurse crop) from seeding hay in the Spring, 2) I'm too tight to pay for killing a cover crop, 3) I didn't think that the oats would get that rank, and finally 4) I was hoping that the oats would decompose enough by April that the ground might dry out on its own. I'm really interested in what they look like come the first of April.
I have managed the rec's on enough winter cereals to develop a disdain for them when it comes to the timing of killing and proper planting AND the extra expenses involved therein, so that experience has tainted my opinion...maybe in an unjustified manner.
I hear you on the winter cereals sucking up moisture in the spring, and I did think of that, but the aforementioned trumped that benefit in my mind. I'm open to suggestion, so "sell me" on your thoughts.
