We have winches on our rigs. Once the tank is unhooked, our rigs will back, so we don't need huge lengths of cable. About 15' is all I ever use. When we ran an air box with dry, I still seldom had to drag them in from that far away....guess I'm just a good driver :)

The easiest thing is to have the tank still on the truck when you go to hook up, that way it can just be pulled up right behind the hitch and easily pulled in. Another trick I used sometimes with the air rig was to tie onto the tank with a tow strap and pull ahead until everything was straightened out, then back straight up to get closer.

I just don't like messing with long winch pulls....probably partially because the air rig had a hand crank winch!
