If the bearing is going out on one end of the input shaft, the shaft is shifting far enough so that the shifter cannot shift collar far enough to engage the gear (second and fourth). But putting it in Reverse the forces are in the opposite direction on the shaft, causing the shaft to go against the good bearing and then the shifter will be able to shift the collar into gear.
