It probably didn't help things when the fall weather made for a short window to apply fertilizer. It's not the farmers fault. The main problem is a lack of a market for hedging fertilizer, probably because of the lack of competition at the supplier end of the business. The retailers could do a better job of communicating with their customers. If they don't somebody else will.
