In Under range, there are no clutches engaged in the unit. There is an over-running or sprag clutch, however, that is supposed to lock up and drive the unit in Under. This one piece is a likely source of what you describe. As they wear, they will operate intermittently like that. You can try to change the fluid and filter in it and it may get better for a while, but the root cause will remain. If you have any mechanical ability and basic hand tools, these are extremely simple units to overhaul on your own. Get yourself a copy of the original Oliver service manual (not an I&T version) for the 1850 that will have an entire section on the O/U unit from the Floyd County Historical Society in Charles City, IA. It will walk you through step-by-step the removal, tear-down, reassembly, and reinstallation on this unit. You will have to pull the engine, clutch, and O/U as one unit - simple to do. Also a good time to address any other items in this area like chain coupler and sprockets, PTO drive hub, PTO solid shaft, clutch/throwout bearing/pilot bearing, etc., engine rear main seal. In the O/U, you may as well replace the clutch discs and all the gaskets and seals as long as you are in there, and you'll want to inspect the other parts inside, but there aren't that many.
