In the western High Plains of the United States there are a number of ways to control/prevent soil erosion by wind. Field size, soil aggregation, crop cover (remember, winter wheat is seeded in the fall and may not be very large during the winter months when wind erosion is the most problamatic), drill row orientation (relative to prevaling winds),ridge height of drill rows, and residue cover all play a role in controlling wind erosion. Hard to grow trees in an area of low rainfall. Even harder to try and integrate windbreaks with terraced land as terraces are never straight and always seem to be oriented with the wind.
