I think the best way to manage "zones" in a field is by soil type. I dont really see the value of managing in grids, simpler but not real practical in true variable rate. Beside just the lay of land, soil type changes are usually the only real difference in a field from one end to the other.

And regardless of the area, grid or soil type ??? Defining the Line is a 50% at best anyway

The fewer LINES You Define can create more Uniformity !
