northcentral iowa | I think that it would work great in the fall, especially in a field that has been worked because it would be more uniform. Where we ran into challenges was with variable soil tilth or firmness going across the field. The H bar is set up with a rock shaft and heavy down pressure springs which work great in no till or real firm soil. In the fields similar to those pictured we would need more down pressure in the wheel tracks and much less in those rows without a track. Once we had it set then the soil type might change and the units would go too deep and start plowing (covering corn). We need more fine adjustment on down pressure for individual row units to accomodate the variability that a rock shaft concept can't. We learned a few tricks and made some "field modifications". The best scenario is firm soil, lots of down pressure and go as fast as you can pull the bar. 80% of the time it worked great, the rest of the time is was not pretty. | |
