Subject: Re: Simple Guidance System for Row Counting

Southern Louisiana
I think that if I would have decided to spend $2,000 or more, I would have already thought of a simpler, cheaper low-tech route. But since we are covering 6000 acres repeatedly over the season, and since every hour wasted costs us major money, calculate how much time it takes to climb off a 4720 sprayer, walk each headland and count rows to flag, climb back on, get the boom primed, etc. Or better yet, hire an extra laborer (one that can count) to stand on the headland all day and count rows. Add those wages up. In addition, running a large sprayer with a 90 or 120 foot boom in smaller fields and tight spaces takes more skill and concentration than you think.

I am not ready to adopt all technologies in precision ag, but an inexpensive guidance system for row crop spraying is a no brainer for our situation. It may be that anyone who resorts to wasting that much time inorder to avoid spending $2,000 has some deeper rooted issues regarding technology.

And please, do not insult my intelligence or my work ethic.
