NW Washington | Yes, it is some of the illegal alien worms that are the problem, not the native species. It is a big problem in northern forest, like Minnesota. One more invasive species issue. I had "night crawlers" where I used to live and they can devour and amazing amount of organic residue in short order. As the name implies they come out on to the soil surface at night or when you get a lot of rain. I copied this paragraph from the above link.
