SE PA | Tillage radishes will grow up out of the ground after they reach an inch in diameter or so. It is normal. However on some soils it's more pronounced than others. it doesn't nescesarily mean there are compaction issues. To test this, I planted tillage radishes into a 3 foot deep pile of mushroom soil. They started pushing out at about 1" in dia.- that same as I've observed in the field. Seeding rate also influences above ground production. The lower the seeding rate the more they will grow out of the ground. i've seen them 20" out of the gound already! But they will still root down with a 1/8th inch taproot into the subsoil. Take a shovel and dig down below the tuber and see how the taproot goes into the subsoil. It's the taproots that are doing alot of good in opening up the subsoil. the tubers are collecting nutrients for next years crop- mainly N. The N will then be availible to next years crop as the radish breaks down the end of Feb. | |
