Subject: Compaction - how do you know when its a problem

Rivers, MB
Had an interesting discussion today with a new to us neighbor who just moved from Norway. He is amazed that compaction seems to be a non-issue for our area (for most of Western Canada I think). this neighbor did some yield monitor comparisons between the drill seeding tracks and where the wings were seeding. No difference in yield.

How do you know when you have a compaction problem? We have noticed that since we switched to using a grain cart so the truck/trailer is always parked right at the approach and the cart comes into that area every 500-600 bu, that area seems to not produce very well. I suspect that is a compaction problem.

This is in a minimum till/zero-till situation. No tillage for the last 15 years and grow wht/canola/peas/sunflowers. Low rainfall area (maybe 10-14" of precipitation/yr) and very cold weather in the winter. Does the frost during the winter break up compaction areas??
