Alberta, Canada | So your saying you leave the field go for 2 years with nothing growing?? How can you afford to do that?
I have sprayed out hay with RU then direct seeded in it and yes here the ground gets mellow, no issues seeding in with a Great Plains notill drill. However I've found
"here" that if the field is really soddy like lots of quack grass in spots it doesn't work that well. Especailly if the spring it's on the dry side. If its just a field of alfalfa and no quack grass/sod grass patches then yes it works ok. The last couple years I've just worked up the old hay fields with a disc then smoothed them off. Then in the spring just direct seed into it. This year though it "forgot" to rain so things didn't work too well!!
