I've seen S-liners like that with 10 speeds, so I see no reason why a 9 wouldn't work. The 6613 would be an even better option if you're looking for a deep hole... or an 8LL. 9's and 13's are good but not as deep. A 10 would probably be worse than what you have.

I do agree with the comments on the rear axle tho. You'd probably want somethin in the 4.50 range that will top out at 65 mph, flat out at 3 grand on the tach with 11R22.5's. That should cure the drive shaft problem. I doubt a transmission will fix that...
