Its a variety dependant thing. We generally can get 2 to 2 1/2 more yield per acre with wheat than rye, so that's what I try to price mine from. I always tried to grow enough for our own needs, and I would grow more if I thought the market was there. I'm not going to grow it for less than what a competing crop will net me, though.
We liked Aroostock for a few reasons, one of them being its smaller seeds than other varieties I've tried. For cover, we got along great with 50# to the acre. For seed production, we'd bump it up to 2 1/2 bu+ some years.
So, what are your rye yields? I don't grow wheat, so I can't make a comparison.
I think I can get Aroostock from Maine for next year. |
