I don't know about that far back, but Danuser was using something similar to gun grease in their gear boxes in the late 70's and early 80's.
I didn't really know this until recently, a friend, who had been putting gear oil in his gear box called Danuser factory for a seal number, and was asked why it was leaking. When they asked him what he was using for lubrication, they told him that it was originally filled with heavy grease. They said that corn head grease would be what they would recommend that he could get locally.
