Subject: RE: Graze some of the 09 corn

New Mexico
Decent bred cows ( young side of broken mouths ) are costing $380 to $500 each, weighing 975 to
1,100 lbs ( selling for 38 to 45 cents per lb ).

1/4 acre of even moldy corn will run that cow thru the winter and she'll gain 200 to 400 lbs on it.

They'll calf in the Spring.

What we're not noticing is this wet cycle may run thru next summer too.
So could be alot of green growth and wet areas that do not get planted in 010.

Run those cows till say Aug ..short wean the calves mid July.

Best slaughter cow market is generally end of July, 1st part of August. 65 to 75 cent cows coming back weighing 1,250 to 1,400 is in the $900 to $1,000 range.

AND you still have those $500 calves at home too.

Young side of brokens also would run another 5 to 8 years in the Midwest if a guy wanted some keepers. still.

Those cows once started, on corn are smart enough to SORT the corn too. They'll eat what's good for em..and leave the toxic crap ( if any ).

Combine the best stuff....but on the marginal corn...let the cows do the work ( they'll make alot more money than combining some of it will ).

Also, the govt should pay the crop loss and grazing is ussually fine with them after that.
Why waste the fuel, time and machinery on some of this?
