Southern Cotton Harvest Off To Slow, Boggy Start For 2009 10-22

Because of the way things have drug out, we're skipping this week on cotton. But we're doing our harvest surveys this week in rice and peanuts, and there's a question about how other crops are doing. So, we're picking up comments regarding cotton, too.

The bad news mostly continues with cotton and other crops, too. Peanuts dug 3 weeks ago that haven't been gathered. Rice that's down and might not be worth harvesting. One guy said he had "1,000 acres of ruts" after finishing rice harvest. And soybeans in the Midsouth that are getting heavily docked, with people lucky to unload them.

It's no picnic in the Southeast, but the reports are a bit less negative there than in the Midsouth. Carl Hobbs and some others there might be able to be more specific. But in some cases in the Southeast it's just a lesser degree of hurt. I had some email back-and-forth with an ag analyst in Atlanta, and that was her take on it, too.

All of this compounded, of course, by the lateness of the crops.
