Cedar Rapids, Iowa | Most of the technology is nothing more than an automated system designed to take care of the mundane stuff. Same idea as a timer on your microwave. Its one less thing you have to deal with, so the operator can spend their time doing more useful stuff like monitoring the implement. Of course there is a productivity gain, which we all know translates into a savings of fuel/seed/chemicals/time/etc.
At the "combine clinic" at the local dealer last month, I made note of the demographic. A large % was in the age 50+ category. This industry is going to look very different in 20 years. Either there are going to be a lot of new farmers, or the remaining farmers are going to have to get more efficient with their times so that they can cover 2x the acres they do now.
