North Central Illinois | I would lean towards a G5 Plus. Yes, its more expensive up front but it comes with permanent AutoTrac, and Section Control, and if you need you can add permanent RowSence as well. Also, if you're looking at moving into more advanced features like AutoPath, ATTA, Machine Sync, and Implement Guidance, the yearly Advanced license is cheaper than putting the Automation 4.0 subscription on a 4640 display. Another thing to note is any new John Deere planter with a SeedStar 5 controller requires a G5 display to run it, a 4640 will not work with a SeedStar 5 equipped planter.
Another cheaper option is a Precision Ag Essentials Kit. The Precision Ag Essentials Kit is $4,000 for the first year. This includes a new G5 Plus display with ONE YEAR of AutoTrac, Section Control, and RowSence. A SF7000 receiver with permanent SF1 signal, and a JD Link M or R Modem.
For the Precision Ag Essential Kit, after the first year if you want AutoTrac, Section Control, and RowSence its $2,000 each year after that. Keep in mind if you do not pay the $2,000 the next year the display will have no activations but can still be used for basic documentation or field boundary mapping. The SF7000 will still have permanent SF1 though
This Precision Ag Essentials Kit is a very economical option for someone that is thinking that in the next 5 years they will be upgrading their machines to one that will have a built in Gen 4 or G5 display. $4,000 get you everything you need for your base hardware. with this kit verses buying a new G5 Plus with PERMANENT AutoTrac and Section Control for $9,700, a SF7000 with permanent SF1 for $4,300, and a JD Link M or R Modem for $500.
I hope that helps!
