Nearly any stress can cause tipback including plant competition from high population, cloudy weather, hail damage, too much heat, lack of nitrogen, leaf disease, and lack of water. If population didn't cause tipback everyone would be planting 45,000 ppa. If you think about it, they are interconnected. High populations = less sun per plant, Cloudy weather = less sun per plant, Hail damage = less sunlight absorbed per plant. Goss' wilt or GLS = less sunlight absorbed per plant ...

As for the difference in tipback in the same field, I would look at each plant that each ear came from including distance to neighboring plants, amount of green leaf area and thickness of the stalk. Plants that emerge just a few days ahead of others usually have a bigger stalk and have been outcompeting the neighbors since day 1.
