Subject: RE: Does anyone grow oats anymore?

We plant California Red Oats for hay every year. Last year seed was scarce and Cal Red was $45 cwt and I couldn't get any. I ended up planting Cayuse Oats for $32. This was a mistake, the Cal Red cures with a lot of red color and weight in the stems, the Cayuse makes a lot of grain but the stems are washed out like straw. The horses don't clean it up, the cows are starting to lick it up pretty good. They better that is all they are going to get this winter.

At those prices I sure wish I was growing seed again. This country used to grow a lot of seed oats. Now the Open Space has gobbled up most of the farmland and wants it to grow up to brush. the salt air got to my last combine and it went to China a while back.
