I think I went to the same field day as you did. Quite interesting, but his thought was foliar apply sugar @ 1 lb/ac when the soybeans are out of the ground. When spraying a before the crop is up use molasses. Reason being molasses has a higher iron content. Oh and the molasses at a rate or 2 qt/ac. He also uses molasses with nitrogen and thio on corn stalks to get them to start decaying. It is a feed the microbes thing.
