Don't feel bad. I've built a steering system from the ground up, including the offset stuff, and I get mentally lost when trying to fix offset issues in the field. Something do do with the pressure of a machine setting when it should be moving. For example, if you have 3 inches of overlap on one side, and 6 inches of skip on the other, you have to change both the width and offset, but by how much. The positive/negative offset part is also confusing. Eventually I added an "Offset Wizard" to my software so that I could tell the system how many inches of overlap/skip there is on each side, and it would calculate the new width and offset accordingly. That really made the tuning easier. The formulas are pretty easy to do in code, but I think it would be pretty difficult to document what to do on a piece of paper in the manual.

On the plus side, once you have those numbers set, you won't have to change them.
