Picture below is wheat , but all small grains look the same when putting out the flag leaf. Area encircled in red shows four stems with flag leaf. Three could be said are in early boot stage . The one farthest right is just beginning to open the boot and expose the head.
Most other stems in the entire picture have opened the boot and are farther along in heading. Hope this helps.

Get all your equipment ready now and hope for good weather when you see flag leaf because rye is FAST!
