You might be able to find out how many days that variety sheds pollen for. Then I'd base the planting difference by GDU, not days.
Might need to wait 100-160 gdu's if you really want to avoid it.
Stressful conditions can extend the pollination window. With the same maturity corn, I've found that I can pretty consistently keep under 0.9% GMO if I wait 200 gdu before I plant. One guy I know who does plant non-GMO corn and has a 5% tolerance spec says that taking 24 rows off the outside and not worrying about it does the trick.
Personally I've watched what happens when I plant a few rows of blue or green corn on the edge of a field of yellow corn. Usually oner 10% colored kernels in the edge rows but under 1% by the time I'm 24 rows in.
One time I had some test at 9% GMO. Only one of the 3 hybrids in a split field. Others were under 1%. Pretty sure that was a seed issue. Definitely ask for purity test results from your seed lot. No matter what you do you can't avoid pollination enough to get it more pure than what you plant. |
