Older models of the ATUs are pretty notorious for that error. As mentioned, check connections. Also make sure the power wires going to your harness aren't too thin. I would say a minimum 14 gauge wire. Also, don't use a cigarette lighter plug. I don't know what your tractor wiring looks like, but I've seen them much too thin for an ATU. A 3 pin Amp or the Deere power strip should be fine as long as you don't have any other power hungry hardware plugged in. One machine in particular, we had to run a wire all the way to the battery because the wheel turned a little harder than others.
