We had similar problems on our pull type Red Ball last year.   It ended up being a bad spot in the wiring harness on the hitch where it had been rubbing against hyd hoses.    Wires had been rubbed bare and they were shorting to each other.  

Took a lot of time to find it and it was very aggravating until it was fixed.
