Mid MO | Grandmother had 400 hens. She sold eggs to the boonville hatchery. In 1964ish she paid to have the house jacked up and a brand new basement and cistern poured. The house was also plumbed for running water. It may be nostalgic to look back or it could be a lesson in how hard work, perseverance, and thrift can take a person a long way.
When I decided to come home, there weren't any successful women farmers to look to. So, I relied on the examples of my Grandmother and great-grandmother and started with the enterprises that made them successful. As I have saved more money and worked more ground, I have shifted to more land extensive enterprises. However, it was the eggs, fryers, turkeys, and sheep that got me started and created cash flow. | |
