I understand DP works like a freeze proof hydrant. My tank type waterers collect all sorts of materials from cattle by backwash, be it hay, grain and even hair.

What mechanism or cleaning process does a DP use to prevent these materials from clogging the drain process that make a DP freeze proof?

Screen on top under flap that gets pushed down for water flow. Remove flap, via 4 stainless steel screws, clean hay off, if needed remove screen (screw in middle).

The on/off of the water is like a frost-free hydrant, below grade. So, it takes a second or two for water to come up as flap is pushed down and a couple of seconds to drain back down when flap is released. You need to install similar to a frost-free hydrant, with a drain/seepage bed at bottom.
