BVD is actually pretty easy to find with the correct test. Have cooperated with some researchers from Auburn University/USDA to gain field experience with an ELIZA test that was able to pick up 1 persistently infected heifer in about 100 that had been individually ear notch tested. These heifers were grazing in a large pasture.
They swabbed the water trough and mineral feeders and picked up the contamination from the one heifer. We went back through and bled them and they were able to pick her out with a different test than the ear notch. She had some odd strain of BVD.
