Some here used to run it through a crimper to aid in drying.
I always thought the best hay was cut with a sickle mower. left a couple days, depending on weather. Raked in the morning and baled right after. Never do more than you can do in 2 hours.
The hard part here is the first cutting may need to lay for 4 days. Some years there are not 4 days on a row rain free.
