Southeast Colorado | I don't know the date he was speaking of. But I'm sure the predictions of 70s peak oil were made long before the 70s.
It's not that much different than most any doomsday prediction. It's usually far enough into the future that those who are making the predictions are never held accountable for the errors of their judgement. Typically they just fade away in time.
EDIT: For example I predict that cash corn will sell for more than $20/bu at some point before 2050.
