Since the large funds have an unlimited amount of money then I don't think so. Our system is built the way it is to allow exactly these kinds of things to happen. Futures contracts being issued with no need to have the actual commodity is one feature, the other feature that was changed around 1920 or something was when you once had to take delivery of a contract or at least demonstrate an ability to receive, was changed so that you could sit in an office with your storage space amounting to the one gallon trash an beside you and trade a few million bushels multiple times a day.

No, short selling is not an important or necessary part of functioning markets. That's absolutely not how capitalism works. But we don't have capitalism, capitalism has not been the key component driving our system since, oh, about 1913.
