Saronville NE | The problem isn't so much with cattle prices IMO. Here in NE anyway it's the pasture rent etc. Guys are giving $450 for 5 months, plus another $40-60 HD in trucking so say $500. Pretty easy to spend another $200 for 90 days during calving to feed. Then add in bulls, vet, 4 months on stalks hauling water etc, interest, insurance, time etc and $1200-1300 a head is gone pretty fast.
Now if in a area that has $200 pasture rent those numbers change fast.
I had a guy I custom drylotted cows for last summer, called other day said I want to bring more than last yr if you are interested. Said he had 100% on breed back, cows were in better condition to handle the winter, his calves were bigger then calves coming off grass and he was still $100 a head ahead of pasture and trucking.
But to do that on large scale takes lots of feed and big lots!
Corn is same way as cattle. Everybody gets greedy and bids profit right out of it. $450 rent vs say $300. Same song and dance. Most of us do it to ourselves. | |
