Subject: Ketogenic diet and variations - not always what people think

Pittsburg, Kansas
The term "keto" diet is thrown around a lot. To some people it means eating keto bars or some special food with keto on the label. That is probably the one thing it is not.

There are actually measurements that can determing if a person is in ketosis so the diet is actually causing ketogenesis or ketones in the bloodstream. It is a scientifically provable diet in that it has metabolic measurements that can determine if it is working.

There are variations of a ketogenic diet for specific purposes. For example controling seizures in epilepsy patients. Some only think of it as a weight loss diet yet it is quite possible to gain weight on a ketogenic diet. It can be helpful for underweight people.

This is an hour and a half long presentation which most will not want to endure. However if you just listen to the first 5 or 10 minutes you can get an accurate description of what a ketogenic diet is from a medical perspective. A low carb diet CAN be a ketogenic diet, but it does not have to be if the carbs are not kept low enough. However a ketogenic diet is always low in carbohydrates since fat is the primary and the majority of fuel used while in ketosis.

Anyway, for those interested in the depths of what a ketogenic diet is and how it can be prescribed by doctors for certain medical conditions, here is the link. Covers some Alzheimer's research. Some cancer research.
