It all depends on the shaft. I can't remember the designations now, but some are "soft" some are hardened externally, and some are fully hardened. The fully hardened ones can shatter. You can tell the soft from the hard by tapping them with a pair of pliers or scratching with a file. It's harder to tell the other two, and you don't want to be wrong.
