Here are some C-12 serial number prefixes and their effective year they were released:
2KS1-39999=year 1999
2KS40000-up=year 2000
MBL(considered a "Bridge engine")=year 2002

The "MBL" engine has pilot injection and the exhaust temps run hotter. There is a possibility that the electronic fuel setting are incorrect from the factory and too much heat comes out the exhaust and could damage the exhaust manifold center section and the turbo(when lugged down near peak torque rpms). CAT has an Excel spreadsheet that shows mechanics the correct electronic fuel setting numbers and hopefully this has been changed/updated on the truck/engine you are looking at. I try to verify these numbers any time a "MBL" engine that comes into our shop that I work on. This spreadsheet has been out for a while, so I hope that most of those engines are updated with the correct numbers by now.
