Subject: Minimal overhaul on small 4 cyl gas engine

What is your opinion of just honing cylinders and going back with standard rings?

We have a 1996 TCM forklift with a 4 cyl Mazda engine in it. It was a forklift we purchased privately. We brought it home and just started using it. Of course none of the electric gauges were working but that is pretty normal for the forklifts we run. Worked great for a few weeks but after a day where it got used for a couple hours straight, it started missing. We had spark on all cylinders but one cylinder had very low compression. The radiator cap isn't accessible without taking off a panel, and dummy us didn't check the antifreeze level when we brought it home. Water pump seal is out. We assume we got it hot enough we took the rings out.

We are going to fix it up, but are just trying to do an in frame ring job and get by. We have other forklifts and this one is smaller and wouldn't have to get a lot of hours on it. Do you think we can get by with honing the cylinders, new std pistons, pins, and rings? Maybe put in a set of std rod bearings? The parts are cheap and it took us less than an hour to get the head off so 2-3 hours going back together. Won't have a lot wrapped up in trying, but a lot of you guys know way more about this than we do. We know this isn't 'right', but what are our odds of having something that would fire on all cylinders for 300 more hours?

We figure the head and valves aren't perfect, but what are our odds of just putting it back on as is. We know once we try to do this 'right' we start getting into time and money and this forklift doesn't rate much of those.
