Yes, they could definitely remove most or all people from operating the trains.

At the same time, they need lots of people to maintain the signal and control systems, the rolling equipment, and the rights of way.

Those people need to be on the job or on-call 24/7/365.

In the public sector (fire fighting, law enforcement), it takes 4 people to cover a single job on that basis - one person is always off duty, and 3 people cover the shifts.

That gets very expensive.

In the private sector, they try to do it with fewer people, and pay them more, for a lower total labor cost.

That is where the railroads are today - relatively high pay in exchange for devote your life to the job until you retire.

Workers today want higher quality of life (more time off) without giving up high pay.

You can't have both.

All farmers and other business owners understand this trade off.
