to check the cable and setup for the EZ-Guide 500, you can use a PC with a serial port and see if the NMEA messages are coming out of the 500 on the wires you have selected. You can use Hyperterminal (which is part of the Windows suite of programs) on the PC to observe the serial port messages. Id your PC (or laptop) does not have a serial port (to match the EZ-Guide 500 with a null modem DE9-F to DE9-F to the PC) you will need a USB to COM port adapter. I have found Keyspan to have the most reliable solution for that component, although others have worked. I sometimes use an oscilloscope to see if there is data on the signal wires. but that might be more difficult if you don't have any access to that equipment.
