Central Kansas | We feed orioles as well. They flock heavily early on at the feeders…but….when they hatch eggs they just shut off coming. Takes a few weeks for fledglings to fly on their own. Adults do not feed babies grape jelly, more insects and some wild berries. After young fledge and leave the nest, you will get a few returning to the feeders but in greatly diminished numbers. The energy provided by early jelly consumption likely aids the reproductive process for some. Orchard orioles are rarely seen here after hatching young but are plentiful prior to that. Can get spendy when they do a jar or 2 a day but very enjoyable to watch. Good on you for doing it. | |
