Last time I travelled with my work laptop, I had fc10 on a liveusb, and I know that network manager found wireless networks when I was in union station fine, not sure if ubuntu uses a similar gnome network applet as fedora, but if it does, in the edit connections window, wireless tab you should be able to find them...
stupid question, but you're sure that the wireless card is activated when you tried? I know with mine, there is a button to turn off the bluetooth/wireless antennae (save battery pwr) and oft times I've forgotten to turn it on, and then get frustrated that it isn't working, then a lightbulb moment ;)
